MEEN BHABAN 1, COLLEGE STREET, KRISHNAGAR, NADIA

There has been much development in agriculture with the introduction of different types of improved technology in this field. But the fish culture is still mostly restricted to its traditional method of irrational stocking and unplanned harvesting. The fish farmers, unlike agriculturist are indifferent to great production potential of a unit water area which can be as high as 6000 kg. per hectare or even more in optimum condition as against 600kg. per Hectare, that is usual average yield through traditional method of fish culture. One can easily imagine the impact of the increased rate of production of fish on rural economy.

But the major constraints that stand in the way of introducing modern technology in inland fisheries to augment fish production are lack of capital and ignorance of improved technology amongst the fish farmers.

With these problems in the backdrops, the Fish Farmers Development Agencies were set up to implement Inland Fishery Project. Under this project, the FFDA, is to secure bank loans for the farmers to develop their fisheries and to release subsidy for the loans sanctioned by the banks. The FFDA has also to organize training programme to disseminate improved technique of fish culture to the farmers to enable them properly utilise the loan sanctioned for fish culture.

The intending beneficiary must have a tank not less than an effective water area of 15 decimal. There is upper limit of water area of 10 hectare in single case.

Farmers having lease hold tanks are also eligible to apply if there lease right, is registered for 10 years.

The revised unit costs will be effective in this district from 01.04.2003.

FFDA subsidy is eligible to all category of farmers big, small or marginal.

The application are to be submitted to local Block Development Officer. After the application is received the Fishery Extension Officer at the block level will formulate the project, preferably holding joint inspection with the concerned Bank official and then submit to the B.D.O. The B.D.O after completion of necessary formalities at his levels will forward the scheme to the Bank with a copy of Chief Executive Officer of the FFDA. After the sanction of the cases, Bank will submit requisition of subsidy to C.E.O. FFDA for early release.
